Montana, Mansfield and the Lost Art of Bipartisanship – A Lecture by Marc C. Johnson – September, 20 2023

A timely lecture from Marc C. Johnson on his new book which discusses Montana’s Senator Mike Mansfield’s lasting legacy in the U.S. Senate, and the results of his working together with fellow Senator Everett Dirksen of Washington. Despite being from different parties, they successfully worked across the aisle to ensure the passage of landmark laws in the 1960’s that benefitted all Americans. September 20, 2023.

As a long-serving NPR journalist, Larry Abramson covered stories ranging from national security and foreign affairs to education.  In addition to his role as an editor and correspondent, Mr. Abramson has also been deeply involved in supporting the development of the profession of journalism, including leading NPR’s Diversity Initiative, conducting workshops on reporting ethics and most recently serving as Dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Montana.

In partnership with the Ivan Doig Center, the Burton K. Wheeler Center was pleased to host author Marc C. Johnson as he lectured on his recent book about Senator Wheeler. 

Burton K. Wheeler (1882-1975) may have been the most powerful politician Montana ever produced, and he was one of the most influential—and controversial—members of the United States Senate during three of the most eventful decades in American history.

Political Hell-Raiser is the first book to tell the full story of Wheeler, a genuine maverick whose successes and failures were woven into the political fabric of twentieth-century America.This is a video of Johnson’s lecture regarding his book about the Senator.

The Honorable John Snow was the Secretary of Treasury under President George W. Bush. He spoke about the politics and economics of the ongoing federal debt crisis and its implications for Montana and the West. Snow explored the dynamics of current congressional and presidential politics and their impact on fiscal policy and economic conditions.

Dr. David Large: The Return of the Repressed

David Clay Large, Senior Fellow at the Institute of European Studies at U.C. Berkeley and Co-Director of Berkeley’s Austrian Studies Program will lecture on the current prominence of right-wing populism in Europe and the origin of these sentiments.

David Clay Large is currently Senior Fellow at the Institute of European Studies at U. C. Berkeley and Co-Director of Berkeley’s Austrian Studies Program. He is also Roger Boas Professor of History at the Fromm Institute, University of San Francisco. Over a long academic career, David has taught at Berkeley, Smith College, Yale University, and Montana State University Bozeman, where he served dutifully in the trenches, off and on, for some twenty-nine years.
